BIOGRAPHY
Music is where Dan Heister, also known as Daniel Carl, truly feels at home—especially when it comes to the trombone. His love for music extends far beyond performing. Daniel is deeply passionate about every aspect of the musical world, which is why he not only plays, but also teaches, writes, arranges, and produces music. His creative work spans many styles, including jazz, blues, rock, and orchestral compositions.
Growing up and living in New Mexico gave Daniel unique opportunities to explore many paths in music. During his college years, he performed alongside legendary jazz artists such as Bill Watrous, Slide Hampton, and Wynton Marsalis, among others. He has played trombone in over 50 musical productions, including Man of La Mancha, Chicago, and Carousel. His performance experience also includes work with the Santa Fe Symphony, numerous big bands, and Latin jazz ensembles. In addition to trombone, Daniel sings and plays piano and guitar, and he is a formally trained and experienced sound engineer and producer.
In addition to performing and producing, Daniel is also an author and educator. He wrote The Church Pianist: Taking The Anxiety Out of Reading Chord Charts to help classically trained and church pianists overcome the challenges of reading chord charts with confidence. Drawing from years of real-world experience, the book provides practical tools, clear explanations, and guided examples to help pianists move beyond written notes and learn how to play freely, creatively, and effectively in worship and contemporary settings.
Above all, Daniel is a devoted husband, father, and follower of Christ. His faith is central to his life and work, and he gives God the glory in everything he creates. He has served as a worship leader in three New Mexico churches over more than 35 years, all while continuing to grow as a composer, producer, and teacher. Through his music, writing, and ministry, Daniel seeks to inspire, encourage, and equip others to use their gifts for God’s glory.
He now owns and runs his own studio where he teaches and creates music. If you would like to know more about Daniel or Daniel Carl Studio please contact us.
